Squadron News:
March 2008
March has been a busy month for our Squadron. First on the list, we would like to congratulate 2Lt Linda Gilmore in receiving her Yeager award. This is the first Areospace award given to Senior members. Secondly, two of our cadets, C/SSgt Kevin Weaver and C/SSgt Ben Capozzi, have received their Wright Brother's awards. This award is the first of the milestone awards given to cadets for their training in Leadership, Aerospace, Physical Fitness and Drill. Congratulations Cadets Weaver and Capozzi. Other promotions this month include Cadet Andrew Hoy, he was promoted to C/SrA (his next achievement will be his Wright Brother's award) and Cadet Piper, he was promoted to C/SMSgt.
February 2008
Guest speaker, Megan Schuchert, an Instructor for the Kinesiology Department at Penn State University, visited our Squadron to discuss Nutrition and Fitness for all the Cadets and Seniors. We discussed general nutrition covering carbohydrates, proteins, fats and fluids. We reviewed the importance of balancing our foods (both good and bad) and proper portion sizes. She gave us some tips on healthier eating while eating out (fast foods vs. restaurants). We also reviewed food labels of various items that were available and talked about healthy after-school snacks. Then we discussed the importance of exercise and how it should be a natural part of your daily lifestyle. She talked about three things every exercise program should have: cardio endurance (walking, running, rope skipping and dance-exercise), muscular strength training (calisthenics, free weights) and strength and conditioning (Pilates, yoga, tension bands). We discussed how everyone should have at least 30 minutes of exercise a day and that by dropping to the floor and doing exercises during the commercials of your favorite TV shows after school/work could accomplish some of this time. After our presentation we spent the rest of the meeting exercising and completing our PT testing. Everyone passed.
